The Swedish Lapphund is a strongly built spitz with a very dense, predominantly black coat. It has small erect ears, dark eyes and a bushy tail curled over its back. Fuller hair around the neck and thighs gives it a rounded, soft appearance. It moves with a free, springy stride and changes direction easily.
It accompanied the Sámi of northern Scandinavia, helping with reindeer, hunting and guarding camps. These varied duties required independence, alertness and close life alongside people. Modern breeding established a Swedish breed associated with this tradition, although many Lapphunds are now chiefly family companions. Their retained abilities are also used in scent work and sports.
It is usually affectionate, lively and very attentive. It enjoys playing with people, quickly recognises familiar signals and engages in new tasks. It often expresses alertness by barking, particularly at unexpected sounds or movement. Close family contact matters greatly. It combines easy learning with persistence, allowing prolonged involvement in activities that interest it.
