The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Sussex Spaniel is low, long and strongly built, with a broad head and large, drooping ears. Its dense coat has a distinctive golden-brown shade, with longer hair on the ears, legs and underside. A heavier build and more measured pace distinguish it from lighter spaniels. Its serious expression does not always reflect its cheerful disposition.
The breed developed in the English county of Sussex to search dense undergrowth and flush hidden birds. Breeders valued thoroughness, persistence and being able to follow the dog's voice when it disappeared into vegetation. Selection for this work established a strong, short-legged type. Its history therefore follows a separate path from lighter spaniels developed to search open ground more quickly.
With its people it is generally affectionate and enjoys staying close to the family. It can be cheerful, entertaining and very expressive vocally. It also shows determination: once interested in a scent or object, it does not always switch tasks easily. Even at a quiet pace it can persistently continue searching, ignoring less interesting stimuli.
