The Styrian Coarse-haired Hound has a strong body and harsh reddish or fawn hair. Muzzle hair forms a small beard, while drooping ears are less heavily coated than the rest of the head. Its practical, compact build is strong enough for sustained work yet agile enough for rocky slopes.
The breed developed in Austrian Styria for hunting in difficult mountain conditions. Dogs were expected both to pursue game with voice and to work accurately after a shot. Finding wounded animals on steep, wooded slopes was particularly important. Breeders especially valued dogs able to hold a trail despite obstacles and difficult ground.
It is determined and very persistent. Absorbed in scent, it continues searching despite obstacles, and its voice may accompany outdoor work for a long time. Its independence involves choosing the route ahead and resolving difficulties on a trail.
