The Standard Poodle is the largest Poodle variety. It has long legs, a slender neck and an elongated muzzle, while a dense curly coat permits many trims. Its outline is balanced and athletic. Running is light and free, and a short trim clearly reveals its sporting build.
Poodles descend from European waterfowl retrievers related to the Barbet. Their French name, caniche, refers to ducks. The breeds gradually separated, and Poodles also became popular companions. Different sizes developed into Standard, Medium, Miniature and Toy. In the FCI classification these belong to one breed and share the main structural features.
Standards are generally bright, sociable and highly attentive to people. They enjoy play, quickly understand rules and remember new activities. Many like running, retrieving and scent tasks combining movement with problem-solving. They may be sensitive to tone and tension. They also invent ways of gaining attention, making ingenuity readily apparent in daily life.
