The Stabijhoun is medium-sized with a slightly elongated body, drop ears and a moderately long coat. Black and white with fine ticking is common, but brown and white also occurs. Longer hair covers legs and tail, remaining much less elaborate than in heavily coated show breeds. Overall it looks like a strong, agile farm dog.
It originates in Friesland, where it hunted, controlled moles and polecats, guarded premises and, in larger individuals, pulled milk carts. Poor farmers and agricultural workers also used it. The name is commonly linked to a Dutch expression meaning stand by me; houn is Frisian for dog. In the twentieth century breeding was organised and separated from the closely linked Wetterhoun population.
It is generally affectionate with familiar people and enjoys remaining near family. It can work with people without losing independence: a scent or movement may prompt initiative. On walks it readily becomes animated by each new trail.
