English Springer Spaniel — size comparison — facts and sources

The English Springer Spaniel is a strong, medium-sized dog with a deep chest. It has a gentle expression, broad drop ears and feathering on the legs, chest and belly. Taller and longer-legged than the Cocker, it is built to cover uneven ground with an energetic, free stride.

Springers descend from British spaniels that found and flushed birds for hunting with nets, falcons or sighthounds. The name refers to putting game out of cover. After firearms became widespread, finding and retrieving shot birds also became important. The modern breed developed from these working dogs, with roles in both hunting and companionship.

Springers are generally cheerful and sociable and enjoy tasks shared with a handler. In the field they become animated, scenting intensively and investigating cover. Their enthusiasm can be pronounced, shifting quickly from waiting quietly to full engagement. Working lines may be particularly intense and focused on finding game.
