The Spinone Italiano is a large, strong pointing dog with a harsh coat, dense beard and pronounced eyebrows. Drooping ears and gentle eyes give its head a calm expression. The coat may be white, white-and-orange or brown roan. It has a broad chest, strong legs and a solid body; a free, enduring trot is especially characteristic in movement.
It comes from Italy's tradition of rough-haired hunting dogs, particularly associated with Piedmont. Similar dogs appear in old paintings, and a griffon originating in Italy was described in 1683. The modern Spinone was developed for versatile game work, including in difficult vegetation and water. Endurance, pointing ability and willingness to retrieve were valued.
The Spinone is usually sociable, patient and gentle with people. It readily seeks the presence and quiet attention of those close to it. During activity it can nevertheless show considerable persistence and thoroughly investigate interesting ground. It can be independent, especially when absorbed by scent, but usually remains cooperative. Its behaviour often has a calm pace without losing engagement in the task.
