Regal jumping spider — size comparison — facts and sources

The regal jumping spider occurs in the southeastern United States, the Bahamas and the Greater Antilles, particularly frequently in Florida. Adults use palms, shrubs and trees in open habitats. The male has a black body with white markings and iridescent chelicerae.

It hunts using keen vision and short-distance leaps. It eats various arthropods, from flies to larger insects. A trailing silk thread acts as a safety line during movement; silk retreats serve for resting, moulting and egg laying.

The male courts with a distinctive display of leg movements. The female places her eggs in a thick silk covering, including beneath bark.
