Raft spider — size comparison — facts and sources

The raft spider lives on peatlands, in wet forests and among vegetation along small water bodies. It occurs in Europe and part of Asia. Adults are usually brown, often with pale stripes along the sides.

It ambushes prey, watching its surroundings and movement on the water. It catches invertebrates and sometimes small aquatic animals such as tadpoles or small fish. It can dive both while hunting and in response to danger. A thin layer of air, appearing silvery, then surrounds its body.

The female carries the egg sac and later prepares shelter for the hatching young.
