The nursery web spider inhabits dense vegetation in meadows, gardens, woodland edges and roadsides in Europe and adjoining Asia. On sunny days it often rests on a leaf with its front legs held close together and directed forwards.
It actively hunts small insects. Adults travel along stems and leaves rather than waiting in an orb web. The male may bring the female silk-wrapped prey. This package is a courtship gift, and its acceptance accompanies the start of mating.
The female carries the egg sac in her chelicerae. Before hatching she places it among plants joined with silk, creating a protective tent. She guards the developing young for a time before they leave the shared covering and disperse.
