Missing-sector orbweaver — size comparison — facts and sources

The missing-sector orbweaver often lives near people on window frames, fences, walls and other structures. It is widespread in the Northern Hemisphere and has also been transported farther afield. Its cephalothorax is yellow-brown with a darker area around the eyes.

Its orb web usually has an empty sector containing a signal thread instead of a sticky spiral. This connects the trap centre to the spider's retreat outside the web. Depending on retreat position, however, the sector may be filled, and young individuals initially spin complete traps.

The male attracts the female through vibrations of a special thread. Eggs are covered with silk in a sac. It resembles other Zygiella species, so abdominal pattern and web location aid recognition but do not always settle identification without closer examination.
