Green-fanged tube web spider — size comparison — facts and sources

Segestria florentina is a large, dark spider occurring in Europe and neighbouring areas as far as the Caucasus. It inhabits wall crevices, spaces beneath stones, loose bark and tree hollows. Adult females have green-iridescent chelicerae. Holding the first three pairs of legs forwards distinguishes it from many other spiders.

It lives in a silk tube hidden in a crevice. Threads radiating from the entrance detect the movements of small animals. When an insect disturbs a suitable thread, the spider quickly emerges, seizes the prey and returns with it inside the shelter.

Males are smaller and have somewhat different iridescence on their chelicerae. Juveniles may be more clearly patterned than adults.
