The garden cross spider lives in Europe and part of Asia and has also been introduced to North America. It occurs at woodland edges, in thickets and gardens.
It builds an orb web between branches and stems. Vibrations in the threads convey information about an insect caught in the sticky spiral. With its legs resting on the web's radii, the spider responds, runs towards the prey and wraps it in silk.
The male signals his presence by plucking threads before approaching the female. After reproduction the eggs remain in sheltered sacs. The young initially cluster together, later dispersing and beginning to build their own small webs.
