Four-spotted orbweaver — size comparison — facts and sources

The four-spotted orbweaver inhabits vegetation in open areas of Europe and part of Asia. It occurs in wet meadows, waste ground and woodland edges, but also in drier places. Four pale spots on the rounded abdomen remain recognisable despite considerable colour variation, from greenish through orange to brown.

The orb web is usually low above the ground. The spider often rests in a camouflaged retreat at its edge. A signal thread connects the shelter to the trap, transmitting vibrations from a captured insect.

The young hatch in spring, and adults appear in late summer.
