Fencepost jumping spider — size comparison — facts and sources

Marpissa muscosa is a relatively large European jumping spider. Its elongated, flattened body in grey and brown shades suits bark surfaces well. It occurs on tree trunks, fences and wooden structures, where both crevices and irregularities provide convenient shelter.

Large front eyes allow it to watch its surroundings while hunting by day. It tracks prey visually and catches it with a short leap. The stronger first pair of legs helps hold the prey.

A silk retreat is built in a sheltered corner and can be used for resting, moulting and reproduction. The female protects her eggs inside it.
