Cupboard spider — size comparison — facts and sources

Steatoda grossa is a spider with a glossy, dark abdomen and slender chestnut legs. It often inhabits buildings, garages and quiet corners but also occurs outdoors. Colour varies between individuals: paler abdominal markings may be faint.

It builds an irregular three-dimensional web anchored in a sheltered place. Threads intercept moving invertebrates, and the spider responds to trap vibrations. Prey may include not only insects but also woodlice and other animals moving near the ground.

The female protects eggs with silk and may produce more than one sac. Her rounded abdomen resembles those of other comb-footed spiders, so structural details rather than colour alone matter in identification.
