The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The domestic house spider is widespread worldwide and often uses human-made places. Buildings, cellars, rubble and crevices beneath stones provide cover and thread attachment points. It has a brown cephalothorax with dark stripes, a patterned abdomen and more distinctly banded legs.
Its web forms a horizontal sheet connected to a tubular retreat. The spider waits at the entrance and responds to vibrations caused by a small animal. It catches prey directly rather than relying on the sticky spiral characteristic of many orb webs.
The female lays eggs in a silk sac. Similarity to other house spiders means that a generally brown appearance alone cannot reliably identify every individual encountered.
