Metellina segmentata is a spider found among herbs, at woodland edges and in open thickets. Its broad range includes Europe and part of Asia. Its light brown abdomen bears a darker pattern, and its slender legs have fine banding.
It builds a slanting orb web and often waits beneath it, facing head downwards. The trap intercepts insects moving through vegetation.
In autumn a male may remain at the edge of a female's web. Prey can form part of courtship: after intercepting it, the male approaches his partner and uses a thread associated with mating.
