The desert blond tarantula inhabits desert areas of the southwestern United States, including places with saguaro cacti. Females are usually light brown; males have black legs, a copper-coloured cephalothorax and a reddish abdomen.
It hunts at night, usually close to its burrow. In winter it seals the entrance with soil, small stones and silk, surviving this period of reduced activity on stored reserves.
Mature males leave their shelters in search of females. At the entrance to a female's burrow they signal by moving the silk threads and tapping a particular rhythm.
