The Spanish Mastiff is an enormous dog with a broad head, strong legs and a massive body. Loose skin forms pronounced folds beneath the neck, and its dense coat can occur in many colours. Its deep voice suits its size. Despite its heavy build it moves freely, especially when unhurriedly covering familiar ground.
The breed's history is linked to seasonal movements of Spanish flocks, particularly Merino sheep. Large dogs accompanied them across extensive regions, protecting livestock from wolves and other threats. At resting places they stayed with the flock while the shepherd attended to other work. Selection therefore favoured resilience, independence and the ability to remain calmly among livestock.
In everyday situations the Mastiff usually remains confident and does not react hastily to every stimulus. With its family it can be gentle and attached, while first assessing strangers from a distance. It may stay in one place for a long time watching the area. If concerned, it can give a clear vocal warning or approach the territory's boundary independently. Its calmness is watchful, and its responses can be very decisive.
