The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Galgo Español, or Spanish Greyhound, has a very slender body, long legs and a narrow head. A deep chest leads into a strongly tucked-up abdomen, and the long tail tapers. Smooth and rough coats occur. Its light but strong outline suits fast, sustained running across open country.
The breed has long accompanied Iberian hunters, chiefly pursuing hares across plains using sight. Spanish sighthounds were exported between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries to countries including England and Ireland, influencing local breeding. Practical hunting importance continued after the modern breed standard was established.
Away from activity, Galgos can be calm, reserved and gentle in contact. They form affectionate relationships without constantly seeking attention. New people or situations are often watched from a distance first. A rapidly moving animal can nevertheless change behaviour immediately. Pursuit then dominates attention, bringing independent decisions and energy unseen during rest at home.
