The Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is distinguished by soft hair in warm wheaten shades. It falls in waves or loose curls, forming a beard and fuller covering on the legs. Its outline is strong, compact and springy. Small folded ears and a lively expression give it a friendly appearance, while its pale coat clearly distinguishes it from many harsh-coated terriers.
It descends from Irish farm dogs serving several functions at once. They controlled rodents, guarded premises and helped hunt small game. Resilience, courage and attachment to people were valued in these conditions. Later breeding established a uniformly wheaten coat and soft texture while retaining the agility and lively disposition of the former farmer's helper.
The Wheaten can be very affectionate and direct in showing joy. It readily greets familiar people, plays and joins household events. It is quick to learn but also determined; interesting movement or scent may quickly turn its attention to independent searching. Courage combines with strong affection, and family contact usually forms an important part of everyday activity.
