The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Smooth Fox Terrier has an almost square outline, a long head and small ears folded forwards. Its smooth, close-fitting coat is predominantly white with black or red patches. Strong legs and a compact body give it the appearance of a dog always ready to move. Attentive eyes emphasise its lively interest in the surroundings.
It descends from British terriers used in fox hunting. It accompanied hounds and worked at the earth when game hid underground. The breed's type was organised in the nineteenth century, and the first Fox Terrier standard was drawn up in 1876. It shares a working tradition with the Wire Fox Terrier, but today they are separate breeds.
The Fox Terrier is bold, active and exceptionally curious about events around it. It enjoys investigating new places, responds to moving objects and can remain engaged in play for a long time. It is usually affectionate and direct with familiar people. It also has strong initiative: an interesting scent or small animal's movement can readily become more important than its previous activity. Its confidence also appears in assertive approaches to other dogs.
