Smooth Collie — size comparison — facts and sources

The Smooth Collie has a slender outline, a long, narrow head and erect ears with slightly folded tips. Its short, dense coat clearly reveals body proportions and leg movement. Its appearance is simpler than the Rough Collie's, but the expression and head shape remain very similar. A light build accompanies endurance and a free, efficient stride.

It comes from the Scottish herding-dog tradition and shares its roots with the Rough Collie. Dogs were selected for flock work requiring alertness, agility and contact with people. A short-haired type retaining a naturally short coat was established separately in breeding. Its different appearance therefore reflects inherited qualities rather than clipping or preparation for shows.

It is sensitive, quick to learn and usually friendly towards people. It reads gestures and tone attentively, often quickly adapting its behaviour to its handler. It enjoys shared activities and play and may first observe its surroundings in new situations. A strong family bond accompanies an interest in movement and an ability to notice changes people might overlook.
