The Small Münsterländer is a medium-sized pointing dog with a strong, proportionate body and a brown-and-white coat. Longer hair on the ears, backs of the legs and tail forms pronounced feathering. Its head has a gentle expression, and dark eyes watch its surroundings attentively. Its build remains agile and athletic without heaviness that would hinder prolonged searching.
Breeding of this type in northern Germany's Münsterland is documented from around 1870. It descended from local dogs that searched for and pointed birds. An association to preserve it as a distinct hunting breed was founded in 1912, and Friedrich Jungklaus drew up the first standard in 1921. The goal was a versatile dog useful in fields, woodland and water.
The Small Münsterländer usually cooperates readily with people and quickly understands the purpose of shared activities. It is persistent, curious and inclined to investigate scents independently. It can focus intensely on finding something or retrieving an object. At home it seeks closeness to household members, while outdoors it shows considerably more energy. Contact with its handler remains important even when working independently at a distance.
