The Slovakian Rough-haired Pointer is a strong hunting dog with a slightly elongated body and distinctive grey coat. Harsh hair forms a beard and pronounced eyebrows but should not cover the entire head. Drooping ears, strong legs and a deep chest complete the appearance of a dog intended for sustained work. Its coat is practical, without decorative curls or abundant fringes.
The breed was developed in Slovakia as a versatile hunting assistant. Breeding aimed to combine searching and pointing game with finding wounded animals and retrieving, including from water. Its Slovak name, hrubosrstý stavač, refers to the rough coat and the pointing dog's working style. Usefulness therefore depended on a whole range of abilities rather than simply standing still to indicate hidden birds.
It is quick to learn and usually willing to cooperate with people. In the field it combines initiative with attention to its handler's signals; it can energetically search a larger area, then concentrate on one trail. Scents can engage it strongly, even during an ordinary walk. With household members it can be affectionate and calmer, readily staying close to its people.
