The Australian Silky Terrier is a small dog with a somewhat elongated body and long, silky hair. Bluish hair along the back combines with tan on the head and legs. It has a wedge-shaped muzzle, small upright ears and expressive dark eyes. Hair falls along the sides but should not obscure free movement or completely cover the feet.
The breed originated in Australia with contributions from Yorkshire and Australian Terriers. Breeders combined small size and soft hair with the watchfulness and energy of working terriers. Sydney was an important centre, explaining the former name Sydney Silky. The first standards appeared in the early twentieth century. A distinct breed gradually became established and popular beyond Australia.
Silkies are usually bold, curious and highly attentive to nearby events. They investigate corners and scents and readily join games. A small animal can prompt a quick reaction, and strangers are often announced by barking. They form strong family bonds while retaining their own opinions. Energy and determination are readily apparent despite their small size.
