The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Shih Tzu is a small, solidly built dog with a broad head, a short muzzle and large dark eyes. Long hair falls down the sides, covers the ears and abundantly clothes the tail carried over the back. Hair growing in different directions around the muzzle creates a characteristic appearance. Beneath its decorative hairstyle is a sturdier dog than it may first appear.
The breed has roots in Tibet, but developed in China, where dogs of this type lived in imperial palaces. The first documented examples arrived in Britain in 1931. Initially they were sometimes confused with other small Asian dogs; later breeding established the Shih Tzu as a separate breed. Throughout this history, companionship remained its main role.
Shih Tzus are usually interested in people and enjoy being at the centre of household events. They may energetically initiate a game, then rest quietly beside their owner. They are bright but have their own preferences and do not always immediately join a suggested activity. Friendliness accompanies confidence and a clear way of expressing what they want.
