The Segugio Maremmano is a strong Italian scent hound with an agile body and drooping ears. Depending on the variety, it has a short or rough coat. Strong limbs and a distinctly working build allow movement through thickets and over uneven ground. Individual dogs may differ in colour without losing the characteristic type.
It comes from Tuscany's Maremma, developing among dogs kept by local hunters. They had long been selected chiefly for usefulness in wild boar hunting. A recognisable population was described in the region as early as the thirties of the twentieth century. Only subsequent efforts by hound enthusiasts brought organised breeding and a shared written standard.
The Maremmano is courageous, persistent and deeply engaged in searching. It can work alone or with other dogs, independently assessing encounters. Its voice changes according to the stage of work, allowing people to recognise whether it is following a trail or has found game. When highly aroused it remains determined, but judgement and managing distance are also valued in approaching danger.
