The Segugio dell’Appennino is a lightly built Italian hunting dog with strong legs and drooping ears. Both short and rough coats occur. Its agile, springy body allows fast movement over slopes and through scrub.
It comes from the Apennine mountains, where it assisted local hunters, especially in hare hunting. Nineteenth-century publications described it, including the magazine “La caccia” in 1882. Its type survived through mountain communities who valued a close dog–handler bond. This tradition included working alone, in pairs and in small groups.
It is lively, bold and keenly interested in its surroundings. During searches it can make its own decisions while maintaining contact with people and other dogs. Its voice changes with the stage of work, helping listeners follow the search’s progress.
