The Sealyham Terrier has a low, powerful body, a broad head and harsh, predominantly white hair. A full beard and eyebrows give it a serious, somewhat dignified look. Its short legs are strong and its body compact. Dark eyes and nose contrast with the pale coat, although coloured head markings may occur.
It originated in the nineteenth century on Wales's Sealyham estate. Initially dogs were selected for hunting and work in game retreats, requiring courage and persistence. It later became popular in shows and as a companion. Breeding established its distinctive head and white hair, while the name preserves its place of development.
It is usually friendly towards people and enjoys staying near household members. It often appears calmer than many terriers but can act decisively. Once interested in a scent, toy or new place, it retains engagement for a long time. It is alert and quickly notices strangers, combining family affection with its own opinions and considerable confidence.
