The Scottish Deerhound is a very tall sighthound with long legs and rough, somewhat tousled hair. Grey is most familiar and emphasises its rugged appearance. It has a narrow head, small ears, a long tail and a bearded muzzle. Its slender build moves lightly with a long, free stride.
The breed is associated with Scottish deer hunting. Dogs had to spot and pursue game across extensive, uneven country. Exact beginnings remain unresolved, so accounts of distant ancestors should not be treated as documented pedigrees. Changing hunting methods reduced its former role, making preservation increasingly dependent on planned breeding.
Deerhounds are usually gentle and friendly with people, without a strong need to guard against every visitor. They readily rest at home and can appear exceptionally calm. Open ground reveals different dynamics: rapid acceleration and close attention to movement.
