The Schipperke is a small, compact dog with a foxlike muzzle, upright ears and dense black hair. Longer hair forms a neck ruff and distinct breeches on the hindlegs. Its head is finer than its strong body. The natural tail may be long, although historical images often show shortened tails.
Associated with Belgium, its name derives from the Flemish expression for a little shepherd. During the seventeenth century these dogs accompanied craftspeople in Brussels' Saint-Géry district. They were valued as alert guards and rodent hunters. Around 1690, shows also featured ornamental collars; a later breed club worked to standardise the different local types.
Usually intensely curious, it continually investigates its surroundings. A closed door, moving object or unfamiliar sound readily attracts attention. It often announces changes with high-pitched barking and treats strangers more cautiously than familiar people. It can investigate an interesting corner for a long time, showing considerable initiative. With its family it is often cheerful, direct and eager to participate.
