The Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka is a small dog with a slightly elongated body and an abundant wavy or curly coat. Head hair surrounds dark eyes and forms a moustache and beard; the haired tail lies over the back. The name reflects its appearance: unlike white bichons, solid colours including black and brown were valued.
Modern development began in Leningrad in the 1950s. Breeders sought a small companion, using available small-breed dogs and establishing the desired appearance over generations. A standard was approved in the USSR in 1966. This is therefore relatively recent planned breeding, although ancestors included dogs with much older traditions.
Bolonkas usually enjoy staying close to people and readily join household games. They can be active and curious but also value quiet owner contact. They respond attentively to human interest and readily learn short tasks.
