The longhaired Russian Toy is a very small dog with slender legs, a light body and large upright ears. Long ear fringes are this variety’s most distinctive feature. Longer hair also grows behind the legs, while the head is more smoothly coated. Large eyes and mobile ears give it a lively, attentive expression.
The breed descends from Russian breeding of small companion dogs, initially influenced by English Toy Terriers. After a long decline, rebuilding in the 1950s followed a separate course. In 1958 a male with pronounced ear and leg fringes was born to shorthaired parents. The trait was established, with Moscow breeder Yevgeniya Zharova playing an important role in developing the variety.
The Toy is lively, curious and usually very devoted to its people. It readily plays, follows household events and responds quickly to new stimuli. It can boldly seek attention and express excitement through its voice.
