The Russian Black Terrier is a large, strong dog with an abundant black coat, beard and long eyebrows. Harsh hair protects a dense undercoat, and a substantial head emphasises its resolute appearance. Its body is strong and legs well muscled, while movement should remain free. Despite its name, it belongs to the group of Pinschers, Schnauzers and Molossoid dogs rather than typical small terriers.
It originated in the Soviet Union in the late forties and early fifties of the twentieth century. The programme was run by the military canine school and Krasnaya Zvezda kennel near Moscow. Contributors included the Giant Schnauzer, Rottweiler, Airedale Terrier and Newfoundland. The aim was a large service dog capable of protection work in varied climates and cooperation with its handler.
The Russian Black Terrier usually bonds strongly with its people and watches its surroundings attentively. It may be reserved with strangers without needing immediate contact. Its composure accompanies readiness to react quickly when it considers this necessary. It readily engages in shared tasks while remaining confident and capable of independent action.
