The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Rough Collie has a narrow, elongated head, a gentle expression and small ears whose tips fold forwards. Its abundant coat forms a neck mane, feathering on the legs and a bushy tail. Beneath it is a capable, moderately light body. The familiar outline combines elegance with the endurance needed for prolonged movement in open country.
It descends from Scottish herding dogs and shares roots with the Smooth Collie. Working shepherd dogs differed from today’s show dogs, and their appearance became more uniform over many generations. Queen Victoria’s interest helped spread the breed beyond shepherding communities. Later books and films about Lassie established its image as a devoted family companion.
Collies are generally sensitive, sociable and attentive to people. They quickly notice changes in tone, routine or atmosphere. Willing to cooperate, they can nevertheless become excited by sudden events. Many bark to announce something new and take an interest in moving people or animals. Quiet closeness at home can alternate with lively, curious play on walks.
