Romanian Raven Shepherd Dog — size comparison — facts and sources
The Romanian Raven Shepherd Dog is large and powerful with abundant, predominantly black hair. Its Romanian name, corb, means raven and refers to that colour. White markings occur chiefly on the chest and limbs. A broad head, powerful legs and dense hair give it a rugged appearance.
It descends from the southern Carpathians and adjoining foothills, including areas around Argeș, Prahova and Brașov. For generations it accompanied shepherds, protecting sheep and cattle and guarding farms. It developed as a local working dog without one individual credited as breed creator. Usefulness chiefly depended on guarding livestock in wolf and bear country.
It is usually calm with familiar people but remains attentive to nearby events. It assesses strangers with reserve and does not immediately allow close contact. Attachment combines with independent decisions. When concerned it more often alerts clearly and positions itself near the guarded place than passively waits for human directions.
