The Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dog is a large, strongly built dog with an abundant, shaggy coat. Long hair also covers its head and legs, making it look even more powerful. Beneath the shaggy covering it nevertheless retains the agility needed in mountains. It is most associated with pale dogs bearing grey or darker patches, clearly distinct in appearance from short-haired flock guardians.
The breed arose from local dogs of Romania's Carpathians, selected chiefly to protect livestock. Shepherds valued resilience and courage in encounters with large predators. Working use mattered more than uniform appearance or showing for a long time. The Romanian canine organisation's first standard dates from 1981 and organised the characteristics of an already existing population.
In familiar surroundings the Mioritic usually remains calm without spending energy on constant activity. It stays alert to strangers, watching carefully without necessarily seeking closer contact. It forms a strong family bond but may act independently in situations it considers threatening. Composure therefore accompanies a clear territorial sense and considerable independence.
