The Bucovina Shepherd is a large mountain dog with a broad head, strong bone and abundant hair. Distinct dark patches often mark a pale background. Longer neck hair and a bushy tail emphasise its substantial outline. Despite its size it should move freely and remain agile on uneven ground.
It comes from Bucovina in northeastern Romania, a region with a long pastoral tradition. Local dogs protected flocks travelling between pastures and guarded farms, deterring predators and warning of danger. Working selection established the large, hardy type behind the modern breed.
With familiar people it can be calm, devoted and composed. Unfamiliar people or animals quickly draw its attention and deep, carrying bark. It may patrol independently, including at night. Its own assessment matters, so it does not always await a command before responding to something unfamiliar.
