The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a muscular dog with a short wheaten coat and a strong, balanced body. Its distinguishing ridge consists of hair growing in the opposite direction along the back. The head is broad between the hanging ears, and the tail is long. Its build combines strength with speed and the endurance needed in a warm climate.
The breed developed in southern Africa from local ridged dogs and dogs brought by European settlers. They tracked large game, including lions. Their job was to occupy the animal’s attention and hold it in place until the hunter arrived while avoiding direct confrontation. F. R. Barnes drew up the first standard in 1922, using the Dalmatian standard as a basis.
Ridgebacks are usually devoted to familiar people but reserved with strangers. They can calmly observe their surroundings and assess situations independently. They do not always seek further commands but readily join tasks that interest them. Outdoors they can be curious, and moving animals may quickly prompt pursuit. At home they often value quiet rest near family, expressing affection without excessive exuberance.
