The Surinam toad lives in quiet, vegetated tropical South American waters. It has a strongly flattened body, triangular head, tiny eyes and broad hind feet. It eats invertebrates and small aquatic animals.

Reproduction involves an unusual protective covering for offspring. Fertilised eggs are placed on the female’s back, and skin surrounds them in separate chambers where development proceeds.
