Spring salamander — size comparison — facts and sources

The spring salamander occurs in eastern North America. Fine spots cover its salmon-orange body, and a pale line runs from eye to nose. Adults select cool, shaded places near springs and streams.

Moist skin contributes to respiration. It catches invertebrates, smaller salamanders and other available prey. When threatened it may hide in mud or swim away through undulating body and tail movements. Larvae develop in water and have external gills.
