The Redbone Coonhound has a uniformly red, short coat, long drooping ears and a strong, balanced outline. Its legs are fairly long, and its muscular body allows efficient movement in both open country and woodland. A smooth coat emphasises its build. Its gentle expression contrasts with the considerable energy shown while searching.
It belongs to the American hounds developed for hunting raccoons and other game. The dog followed scent and, when the animal took refuge in a tree, stayed below and called the hunter with its voice. Endurance, obstacle-crossing ability and persistence on a trail were valued. Uniform red colouring became one feature distinguishing the Redbone from other Coonhounds.
It is usually cheerful and affectionate towards its people. It enjoys staying near them, but outdoors scents readily absorb its attention. It can investigate for a long time without tiring, deciding independently where to search. Sociability therefore combines with considerable independence. Voice, activity and interest in animals remain important aspects of its behaviour even when it serves solely as a household companion.
