The Ratonero Bodeguero Andaluz is a lightly built, athletic dog with a short, predominantly white coat. Black and tan markings are usually concentrated on the head. It has an attentive expression, strong legs and ears folded forwards. It moves quickly, turns easily and can investigate a tight corner in an instant.
The breed developed in Andalusia's Jerez region, associated with the wine trade. In the nineteenth century British firms brought Smooth Fox Terriers there and crossed them with local dogs. Their task was controlling rodents in wineries, ports, stables and warehouses. White colouring was preferred because it made dogs easier to see in dark rooms. Bodeguero still recalls work in wine cellars and stores.
It is curious, cheerful and readily makes human contact. In familiar surroundings it moves easily between shared play and investigating interesting places. Small movements or rustling readily attract its attention, and an activity can absorb it for some time. Despite its friendliness it remains bold and ready for independent action. Its energy often appears in short, rapid responses to nearby events.
