Rat Terrier — size comparison — facts and sources

The Rat Terrier is an agile American dog with a short coat, light outline and attentive expression. Its smooth coat reveals muscles, and strong legs provide speed and nimbleness. Colouring usually includes white with coloured patches. Varieties differ in size while retaining the capable build of a working farm dog.

The breed developed in the United States from terriers and other dogs selected for everyday farm duties. Rat control was particularly important, reflected in its English name. Farmers valued fast, enduring dogs able to find rodents independently in buildings. This working selection allowed more diversity in appearance than breeding conducted from the outset to one show standard.

The Rat Terrier is inquisitive and quickly becomes interested in rustling, scent or movement in grass. It enjoys investigating corners, digging and seeking hidden objects. With household members it can be affectionate and playful, watching people attentively during shared activities. It combines easy learning with initiative; once it finds an interesting trail it can pursue it with great determination.
