The Rajapalayam is a tall, shorthaired dog with a white coat and pale nose pigmentation. Long legs, a deep chest and a tucked-up belly create a slender but distinctly powerful body. Drooping ears and a relatively long head complete the appearance of an Indian working dog capable of fast movement across open ground.
It originates in Tamil Nadu in southern India and takes its name from Rajapalayam town. Local tradition links it with hunting and protecting property. Studies describe the surviving population’s build and characteristics, while breeding efforts chiefly aim to preserve the native type.
It may be strongly attached to its person and reserved with strangers. It watches unfamiliar people nearby and can investigate concerning situations independently. An animal’s movement may quickly trigger interest and pursuit. In familiar surroundings it is often calmer while remaining alert to events beyond its immediate family.
