The Rafeiro do Alentejo is a large, massive dog with a broad head and dense coat. Its body is slightly elongated, and powerful limbs support considerable weight without clumsiness. Various colours and patches occur, from fawn and grey to black and brindle.
It developed in Portugal's Alentejo, a region of extensive pastures and large farms. Its history is linked to seasonal flock movements between mountains and plains. Large accompanying dogs spread along these routes. In Alentejo a guardian type became established, remaining with livestock and property even while people rested.
It is usually composed and economical with energy. It may lie apparently motionless for a long time while carefully watching nearby. Vigilance often increases in the evening and at night. It treats familiar people differently from strangers: affectionate with family, it may maintain a clear distance from newcomers. It often decides independently whether to approach, alert or inspect the area.
