The Rabbit Wirehaired Dachshund is the smallest Dachshund with a harsh coat, beard and bushy eyebrows. Its elongated body stands on short, strong legs. Hair on the body is short and close-fitting, while facial hair gives it a distinctive appearance. It is sturdily built and moves efficiently with its body close to the ground.
The rabbit variety is associated with hunting in small burrows inaccessible to larger dogs. It comes from the same German tradition as other Dachshunds, developed from low-set hounds. Besides working underground, the breed proved useful in tracking wounded game and flushing animals. Breeding was organised into three size categories and three coat types, and the Deutsche Teckelklub, founded in 1888, helped establish its rules.
The Rabbit Dachshund can focus intensely on a scent and search independently for its source. It is persistent, curious and bold, yet often seeks closeness to familiar people. It readily returns to an engaging game and perseveres with an activity once started. It is also alert to new sounds, frequently announcing them by barking.
