Rabbit Smooth-haired Dachshund — size comparison

The Rabbit Smooth-haired Dachshund belongs to the smallest Dachshund size category. It has a smooth, short coat, elongated body and strong, very short legs. Its long head and drooping ears retain the proportions typical of the whole breed. It is smaller than the Miniature Dachshund but similarly strong and compact.

The variety's name refers to working with rabbits and moving through small burrows. Its history is part of the development of Dachshunds in Germany, where low-set, persistent hounds useful underground were selected. Dachshunds were also used to track and flush game above ground. The modern breed includes three sizes and three coat types; the Rabbit Smooth-haired Dachshund is one of these nine varieties.

It is curious and courageous. It enjoys sniffing, investigating hidden corners and watching the movements of small animals for long periods. With household members it can be affectionate and deeply engaged, while continuing to make its own decisions. It enjoys shared play and often asks directly for attention. It can also respond alertly to unfamiliar sounds and new people.
